American Ginseng – Xi Yang Shen (Hua Qi Shen) – Premium Raw Herb
American Ginseng – Xi Yang Shen (Hua Qi Shen) is a species of ginseng native to mountainous regions of the eastern US and southeastern Canada (Panax quinquefolium) that is much cooler in its thermal nature than its Asian cousin…so while it does does offer many of the same type of benefits of Asian ginseng (e.g. immune modulation, improved concentration, improved endurance), it is much better suited for those with heat in their overall patterns (e.g. red face/ruddy complexion, irritable, high-energy, high blood pressure etc…); in fact, it can help balance these issues out and clear heat from the body. Some potential uses for this herb may include:
- Weak digestion
- Recovering from convalescence (e.g. long illness)
- Chronic trouble maintaining weight/nutrition
- Fatigue & weakness
- Poor absorption of nutrients
- emotional instability & anhedonic mood states
In terms of Chinese medicine theory, it (1) nourishes the qi and yin of the Lung and Kidneys; (2) clears fire from yin-deficiency; and (3) generates body fluids
Other thoughts about this herb: This is a nice alternative to Asian ginseng (Ren shen), which is often too strong for the elderly and those in a weakened state (e.g. chronically ill, convalescing from long illness, etc…)… you can cook a little bit of this root into porridge or congee for those folks
