Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis):

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis), a member of the mint family, is a wonderful herb that has gentle, calming effects on the nervous system. It contains an enzyme that effectively increases production of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma amino-butyric acid) which is used by the brain to help modulate the body’s physical reactions to stress, anxiety, and over-excitement. In this way, it helps to promote falling asleep more easily. This herb combines particularly well with Valerian root (which has a more straight-forward, sedative effect) to more fully address restless sleep patterns/insomnia. Lemon balm is also an excellent choice to relax the mind and calm anxiety in situations where you do not want to become drowsy.

Traditionally taken as a tea immediately after meals, Lemon Balm also helps promote healthy and vigorous digestion. It does this in two ways. First, the volatile oils in Lemon Balm contain chemicals known as “terpenes” that relax muscles and relieve symptoms such as excess gas; and secondly, Lemon Balm stimulates the production of bile, which helps with digestion (especially greasy meats and oils).
