Ma Zi Ren Tang (Apricot seed & Linum Formula) – Liquid Extract (Tincture):
Ma Zi Ren Tang (Apricot seed & Linum Formula) is a classical Chinese Medicine formula designed for those with habitual constipation marked by stagnation, heat, and dryness. In practical terms, this translates into cases of chronic constipation in which the stools that do pass are very dry and firm. The formula works by generating fluids & moistening the intestines; this makes it useful for elderly persons who get constipated often and would benefit from treatment with an emollient (stool-softener). It also can be used to address IBS* and colitis* when used appropriately in conjunction with a trained TCM practitioner.
This formula contains Da huang (which stimulates peristalsis) and Mang xiao (which draws fluids into the large intestines through osmosis); together they comprise a potent combination to move dry. hard stools and should so this formula should be used with care for weakened/convalescent individuals, starting with a smaller initial dose to gauge the effects of this formula on the individual before increasing the dosage to standard levels. See the formula Run Chang Tang for a gentler, longer-term formula for constipation rooted in deficiency patterns.
Ma Zi Ren Tang is contraindicated during pregnancy.

Ma Zi Ren should be used on an as needed basis to move the bowels when dryness in the Large Intestines has led to constipation. Start initially with half of the maintenance dose to gauge the effect on the individual and then increase to full maintenance dose if appropriate.
This formula is intended to be used from a few-weeks to no longer than a few months, after which time period the appropriate constitutional formula should be used to maintain balance over the long term. Note that there are strong purgative herbs in this formula and so caution should be used in patients with especially weak constitutions– it is for this reason that consulting with a trained TCM practitioner is recommended when administering this formula (to the elderly or convalescent).
Contraindicated for use during pregnancy.
Use caution when nursing as Da Huang can pass through the breast milk causing colic and diarrhea in infants.
