It gets its name from the milky-white liquid that runs off of the plant’s leaves when they’re crushed. It is also known as St. Mary’s thistle, holy thistle and silybum.
Milk Thistle is best known as an aid to liver detox. The plant contains the flavanoid silymarin, which acts as an anti-oxidant that functions to inhibit the liver-damaging effects of free radicals that are produced from the metabolism of toxic substances such as ethanol, acetaminophen, and carbon tetrachloride… it has also been shown to have anti-fibrotic properties and also to inhibit toxins from binding to cell membrane receptors in the liver…. a mighty potent herb indeed!
