What is Plum Flower – Salvia Teapills (Dan Shen Yin Wan):

Plum Flower – Salvia Teapills (Dan Shen Yin Wan) is a Chinese Medicine formula indicated for use with chest pain caused by poor circulation of blood or the build-up of blood fats. It addresses angina pain that distends down the arm, palpitations, tachycardia, and restless sleep/insomnia. It can also be helpful for a variety of presentations that have blood stasis in the chest and head as a component of the disorder (e.g. congestive heart conditions, arrhythmia, headache, dizziness, and head trauma).

Clinical notes/comments on this formula: Dan Shen (Salvia Root) is the chief herb, comprising over 2/3 of the formula.  It is one of the most commonly used herbs to invigorate the blood and dispel blood stasis. In Chinese hospitals it is highly respected for its effect on reducing blood emboli that affect the heart and/or brain and is regularly used both as a preventative and following stroke or heart attack to address thrombus formation. The assistant herbs in this formula are Tan Xiang (sandalwood) and Sha Ren (ammonium fruit). In general these two herbs move qi in the middle jiao and dispel cold; in this formula, they assist Dan Shen by further opening the blood vessels to invigorate blood flow and break down accumulated blood lipids causing the variety of presentations discussed above.

Dan Shen Yin is often used in the treatment of Coronary Heart Disease and Cardiovascular Disease.

Veterinary use of Salvia Tea Pills

Our holistic veterinarian prescribed these for my cat. He has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and she said these would help “keep blood moving” and reduce the potential for blood clots related to HCM. He recently had another ultrasound of his heart and the vet said if anything, his heart looks *better* than one from last year. Correlation isn’t causation but it’s the only thing we added for his heart disease so make of it what you will.
