This is a proprietary blend of three herbs that all benefit the Heart and the circulation of blood. San qi (notoginseng) stops bleeding without causing stagnation; Dan shen (salvia root) benefits the circulation of blood and is widely used in Chinese hospitals for this purpose; and Shan zha {hawthorn berry) also has an affinity for tonifying and nourishing the Heart.
Taken together in formula, these herbs combine to activate blood circulation, reduce swelling, and disperse blood stagnation. So in addition to generally nourishing the Heart, this formula can be used to address abdominal pain associated with dysregulated menses and postpartum issues/conditions (and can also help relieve hernial pain and swelling).
In the contemporary practice of TCM in China during modern times, Dan shen & Shan zha’s action of activating blood circulation to remove stagnation has led to their use to treat hypertension and various manifestations of coronary artery disease.
