It is also useful as an adjunct to formulas that clear heat-toxins from the lower jiao for its action to help “flush out” the detritus from bacterial infections in the intestines, uterus, and ovaries (to include appendicitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and ulcerative colitis).
The chief herb in this formula is rhubarb root (Da Huang). It is a strong purgative and its use is PROHIBITED DURING PREGNANCY. Furthermore, this formula is meant to be used short term to achieve the desired results– that is, from a few days to a week. It also easily damages Spleen and Stomach qi– so one should monitor for abdominal bloating, pain and distension and poor digestion when using this formula.
