Horny Goat Weed (Yin Yang Huo Tang) is best known for its ability to enhance male libido. In terms of Chinese Medicine, it tonifies Kidney yang; in men it is used to address Kidney yang deficiency that presents with sexual disorders such as impotence, lack of sexual desire, incomplete erection, premature ejaculation, spermatorrhea, and low sperm count. It also treats various manifestations of cold and deficiency in the Kidney such as soreness of the lower back/weakness in the knees and infertility in women.
This herb can also be used to dispel wind-cold-damp in the channels as well– this might present as pain, cold, and/or numbness in the limbs and extremities (fingertips and toes) or as bi zheng (painful obstruction syndrome), which shows up as muscle spasms and cramps.
It should also be noted that is a very warming herb without the qualities of nourishing jing (essence), yin, or blood to balance it out; therefore long-term use as a single herb is not recommended (especially if you already tend to “run hot”)!
