Product Description

Plum Flower – Shou Wu Pian – He Shou Wu

Shou Wu Pian, or He Shou Wu is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula recommended for those with hair loss, graying hair, weakness in limbs, dizziness, and aching back and knees.

Shou Wu Pian, or He Shou Wu may be used for the following:

  • Hair loss (Alopecia)
  • Hair re-growth
  • Keep hair from graying
  • Weakness in limbs
  • Dizziness
  • Tinnitus
  • Numbness in extremities
  • Aching back and knees
  • Soreness in loins

Several published human clinical trials have supported the traditional use of He Shou Wu (the only ingredient in this formula). While the results vary among studies and individuals, over 60% of people who had hair loss (alopecia) experienced hair regrowth within 3 months after taking He Shou Wu. In animal studies with aging mouse models, He Shou Wu was shown to lower total cholesterol and triglyceride, to reduce brain pathological changes and promote learning and memory. It is also shown to contain multiple anti-oxidants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Plum Flower Shou Wu Pian (He Shou Wu) used for?

Plum Flower Shou Wu Pian is a classic TCM formula centered on He Shou Wu (Polygonum multiflorum), traditionally used to nourish Liver and Kidney Yin, replenish Jing (essence), and tonify the Blood. It is commonly indicated for symptoms associated with Liver and Kidney deficiency, such as premature graying of hair, hair thinning or loss, soreness and weakness of the lower back and knees, and general fatigue. In TCM, it is considered a longevity tonic that helps restore vitality and support healthy aging.

How do you take Plum Flower Shou Wu Pian?

Plum Flower Shou Wu Pian is taken orally as a tablet; the typical adult dosage is to follow the directions on the product label or as directed by a qualified TCM practitioner, usually swallowed with warm water. Taking with warm water helps support digestion and the assimilation of the herbs. As with all herbal supplements, it is recommended to consult a licensed healthcare practitioner before use, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking other medications.

What does ‘He Shou Wu’ mean, and what makes it different from processed versus raw forms?

He Shou Wu (何首乌) translates roughly as ‘Mr. He’s Black Hair,’ a name rooted in a famous TCM legend about an elder who restored his dark hair and vitality by consuming this root. Critically, there are two forms: raw (Sheng He Shou Wu) and processed (Zhi He Shou Wu), which is prepared by steaming the root with black bean liquid. The Plum Flower Shou Wu Pian formula uses the processed form, which is considered safer for long-term tonic use and is specifically suited for nourishing Blood and Jing, whereas the raw form has different properties and a distinct usage profile.
