White Peony root (Bai shao) is a cooling and nourishing herb with an affinity to the liver. In the practice of TCM, it is added to many formulas that address gynecological concerns such as irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, uterine bleeding, and gestational and postpartum disorders.
This herb is also said to “soften the Liver”– and as the Liver is responsible for the smooth and proper distribution of qi throughout the body, it follows that incorporating Bai shao into one’s diet can help to ease overall tension in the body and in the emotions, This “softening” property can also help with muscle & joint cramping, stiffness, and pain (as the Liver also governs the tendons & muscles).
