Product Description

Plum Flower – Four Pillars Teapills – Si Ni Wan

Plum Flower – Four Pillars Teapills, or Si Ni Wan is a classical Chinese Herbal Medicine formula (c. 220 AD) that helpfully addresses various presentations rooted in stagnation of Liver qi and blood. In the modern clinic, it is most often used to support normal gastro-intestinal function and is used to treat various forms of gastric distress such as:

  • coastal fullness and distention
  • abdominal or epigastric pain
  • belching
  • nausea
  • loose stools

Note that this is not only a digestive formula; it is also applicable to address symptoms of PMS and hepatomegaly (enlarged liver organ). Also useful as an adjunct formula to address chronic hepatitis and chronic cholesystitis, mastitis, and fibrocystic breasts.

Clinical Notes: Si Ni translates as “four counterflow”– this points to its use when qi and blood are not being properly distributed by the Liver. For this reason it is a base for more subtle and complex formulas that address conditions with constraint in the Liver at the root (source: Fratkin’s Clinical Desk Reference, 1st ed., p 616)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Plum Flower Four Pillars Si Ni Wan used for?

Si Ni Wan is a classical TCM formula traditionally used to warm the interior and rescue devastated Yang, addressing patterns of cold from internal deficiency. It is indicated for symptoms such as cold limbs, lethargy, aversion to cold, and a faint or deep pulse associated with Yang deficiency and internal cold. Practitioners commonly use it to support adrenal fatigue patterns and conditions where the body’s warming function has become severely compromised.

How do you take Plum Flower Four Pillars Si Ni Wan?

Si Ni Wan is taken orally as teapills with warm water. Consult a licensed healthcare practitioner or TCM provider for the appropriate dosage for your individual constitution and condition.

What are the key herbs in Plum Flower Four Pillars Si Ni Wan?

The formula centers on four primary herbs: Zhi Fu Zi (prepared Aconite root), a powerful Yang-rescuing herb that dispels internal cold; Gan Jiang (dried Ginger), which warms the middle and assists Fu Zi in restoring Yang; and Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried Licorice root), which moderates the formula’s intensity and harmonizes the other herbs. Together, these ingredients form one of TCM’s most important formulas for treating true cold from Yang collapse.
