Frequently Asked Questions

What is Jia Wei Xiao Yao Tang Bupleurum and Peony Tincture used for?

Jia Wei Xiao Yao Tang is a classical TCM formula traditionally used to soothe Liver Qi stagnation, clear Heat, and nourish Blood, making it especially suited for symptoms such as irritability, emotional tension, irregular menstruation, and mild hot flashes. It is an augmented version of the foundational Xiao Yao San formula, with the addition of Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark) and Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit) to address Heat signs alongside Liver and Spleen disharmony. Practitioners commonly recommend it for women experiencing premenstrual discomfort, mood fluctuations, or menopausal transition.

How do you take Jia Wei Xiao Yao Tang Bupleurum and Peony Liquid Extract Tincture?

As a liquid extract tincture, the recommended approach is to measure the appropriate dose using the dropper provided, then add it to a small amount of warm water before drinking. Liquid tinctures offer efficient absorption and allow for flexible dosing adjustments. Always follow the dosage directions on the product label and consult a licensed healthcare practitioner or TCM professional before beginning use, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking other medications.

What does ‘Jia Wei’ mean, and how does this formula differ from the standard Xiao Yao San?

Jia Wei’ literally translates to ‘added flavors’ or ‘augmented,’ indicating that this formula is a modification of the classic Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer) by adding two additional herbs. The two added herbs — Mu Dan Pi (Cortex Moutan) and Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae) — introduce Heat-clearing and cooling properties, making Jia Wei Xiao Yao Tang more appropriate than plain Xiao Yao San when symptoms include a feeling of warmth, flushing, or inflammatory signs alongside Liver Qi stagnation and Blood deficiency.
